In 1990, China only had 250,000 private passenger cars in the entire country. Less than two decades later, China has over 11 million private cars on the road with close to 10 million new cars sold each year. And still only 1% of the population has cars.
Chinese leaders have adopted a plan aimed at turning the country into one of the leading producers of hybrid and all-electric vehicles by 2012, and making it the world leader in electric cars and buses after that.
• I.B.M., is trying to develop a new battery technology called lithium air that could allow a car to go 500 miles on a single charge. Winfried Wilcke of IBM said
“What we do in the U.S. doesn’t matter, What matters is what China does”.
The Chinese government has a goal that 50 percent of all new cars sold in China by 2020 will be battery-powered".
