The Hydrogen Storage Tank’s Extreme Safety Is Basic

NEXO Hydrogen Tank Safety
In the global hydrogen vehicle market, Hyundai's NEXO sales will be 11,179 in 2022, an increase of 21%, continuing to lead Toyota's Mirai. Mirai is facing a dismal year, selling only 3691 units, a full decline of 38%. Since Hyundai Motor's hydrogen storage tanks are outsourced, unlike Toyota's production, its suppliers will be rewarded with the world's largest sales volume of NEXO, which has attracted special attention.Although Hyundai Motor launched NEXO later than Toyota’s Mirai, its attitude toward launching various types of hydrogen vehicles in an all-around way is more positive than Toyota Motor’s. The suppliers of hydrogen storage tanks seem to adopt the principle of decentralization and adopting measures for local conditions.

Contribute to local production and support. NEXO is produced in South Korea and uses the local manufacturer Iljin Composite Materials, formerly known as the Korea Composite Materials Research Institute established in 1999, as early as early 2003, it began to engage in the development of Type IV hydrogen storage tanks. In 2011, due to the foresight of Iljin Group, the acquisition is based on the prospects of the hydrogen storage tank market. The company claims to have successfully mass-produced the world's first Type IV hydrogen storage tank and has already mass-produced more than 100,000 hydrogen storage containers, with no major deviations in safety. The company emphasizes that it has a unique patented technology of wrapping the bushing with carbon fiber at the nozzle joint connecting the bushing and the valve to prevent hydrogen leakage, etc., and conducts various tests such as high-pressure repeated filling of hydrogen to check that it can withstand external impact, flame and low temperature and other extreme cases. According to the safety data provided by the company, it can reach more than three times the fire risk evaluation standard, up to 60 minutes, the pressure rupture can reach more than 1575 Bar, it can withstand the impact of 1.8 meters drop, and it will not break when the gun penetrates, -50 to 90 degrees C extreme temperatures, etc., while ensuring the highest level of safety, compared with the standard for the maximum number of hydrogen refueling times, it has a durability of about 10 times, reaching 45,000 times.

Iljin began supplying hydrogen storage tanks for Hyundai Motor NEXO in 2014, and in 2019, it will also provide hydrogen storage systems installed on Hyundai Motor's police hydrogen vehicles and medium- and long-distance wide-area buses. In 2022, Hyundai Motor will participate in the green tank terminal project of the California Environmental Authority, and enter the North American hydrogen commercial vehicle market with the Exynter large-scale hydrogen tractor model. Iljin’s hydrogen storage tanks are also selected. The capacity of each truck’s hydrogen storage system is 10 times that of Nexo above large mobile systems.
